Calf and achilles tendon pain

Calf and achilles pain are very common injuries sustained by Australians. Active lifestyles, and a host of other factors play a large role in the commonality of pain experienced in calves, achilles tendons, and arches / plantar fascias.

Often these issues relate to stiffness at nearby joints, local muscle weakness / conditioning issues, footwear, or overuse.

A physiotherapist works with these ailments by assessing the region for possible causes (such as hinted to above) and forms a full picture of the issue. Our calf, ankle, and foot region work as one interrelated mechanism and as such the mechanism needs to be properly assessed to determine what is causing the issue.

Hands on methods such as soft tissue massage, or joint mobilisations can be effective. But often they require coupling with a tailored program to ensure range of motion is maintained, as well as strength and muscular endurance through key associated areas.

Understanding "loading" and how our body tolerates activity is imperative to properly addressing any issues in this area - and indeed overuse issues around the body.
